While COVID- 19 was devasting the nation, my family was dealing with our own crisis. The summer of 2020 we received news that our mom was diagnosed with stage 4 Congestive Heart Failure.
The doctors in Queens had done all they could do and they were ready to send her home with hospice care to live out the rest of her days. They had done all they could but God was just getting started.
In the midst of a global pandemic, I packed up my Brooklyn apartment of 11 years and my mom’s Queens apartment of 43 years, and in five weeks we moved together into a townhome in Port Jefferson Station.
Within two weeks of being in our new home my mom would end up in the hospital again, but this time, she went to the Heart Institute at Stony Brook. I had no idea they specialized in cardiology care– but God knew! And on November 12, 2020, He used a Left Ventricle Assist Device (LVAD) to save her life!
The name, With My Whole Heart, is a nod to the open-heart surgery performed that day when they took a heart that was functioning less and made it whole again. Our mom is our inspiration. Her willpower to live motivates us to fight to make sure she has the best quality of life possible.
As her caregivers, we thank God for our family and friends who have been and continue to be the wind beneath our wings. Unfortunately, everyone doesn’t have support, a listening ear or a village.
With My Whole Heart wants to be that village and a safe-haven for people in the caregiving community.
